Directional Wind

Directional Wind

Orbital Stack provides directional wind results on presentation plane surfaces as well as volumetric streamlines. Each of these results has its own color scale.

Climate Scaled Wind Speed results use a horizontal color legend and are 80th percentile scaled. This means that the results shown consider wind speeds in the 80th percentile for that wind direction – qualitatively these are what can be expected for strong, gusty conditions.

Unscaled Wind Speed Ratios results use a horizontal color legend and are presented as a directional wind speed ratio. Simulated directional wind speeds are divided by the reference wind speed to produce a dimensionless ratio typically in the range from 0 to slightly more than 1.

The volumetric (streamline) directional wind results use the volumetric color scale. These results are displayed as a wind speed ratio in the same manner as the unscaled directional data and consider annual wind data.

Horizontal Color Legends

Directional Wind Color Legend (Horizontal)

What is it measuring?

The 80th percentile scaled wind speed at a location for a defined season and wind direction (315 is NW). Wind speed is in meters per second.

What options can I specify?

Weather data is selected by the user. Results are scaled for climate data. Year-round conditions are used.

Unscaled Wind Speed Legend (Horizontal)

What is it measuring?

The relative wind speed ratio for the given wind direction. This is a dimensionless wind speed ratio.

What options can I specify?

None, and the plots are neither seasonal nor scaled for climate data.

Volumetric Color Legend

Directional Wind Color Legend (Volumetric)

What is it measuring?

The relative wind speed along the streamlines for the given wind direction. This is a dimensionless wind speed ratio.

What options can I specify?

None, and the plots are neither seasonal nor scaled for climate data.
